He also make an endeavour to meet the needs of female patients footwear.+ He uses MICROCELLULAR rubber for the soles of the shoes(slippers) to prevent ulcer formation on the sole of the foot. How this special rubber works is , when the patient bear weight on the feet(soles) the weight of the body is distributed around on all sides ,so that FOCAL PRESSURISED POINT is avoided. this will prevent formation of foot ulcer. Foot ulcers are the commonest deformity the Leprosy Patients suffer due to the damage of the nerves that supply the foot(and skin). Once the protective pain is gone, the patient would not notice any thorn, a nail or a sharp stone going into the foot causing an ulcer. with secondary infection the abrasion ( break in the skin) gets bigger and forms a foot ulcer, which is so often deep seated exposing the bones due to lack of pain. Because the foot is weight bearing, the skin graft needs to be full thickness graft, therefore the Surgeon takes a full thickness skin from surrounding non-weight bearing area of the leg, with a pedicle consisting of an artery and a vein and covers the foot ulcer. To complete the healing, patient may need to stay 4-6 months. Therefore avoiding the ulcer formation is very important. HENCE THE MICROCELLULAR RUBBER is so essential to include in the footwear.
