THE WALL THAT HEALS COMES TO WILLIAMSBURG The Wall That Heals, a one-half size replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, is coming to Williamsburg next month. The Wall will arrive in town at 3:00 PM on October 7th accompanied by a police and motorcycle escort. The route will be from I-64 (exit 238) via VA-143, VA-132 and Henry Street to the display site on the Dewitt Wallace Museum lawn at 326 Francis Street. We encourage everyone to turn out and welcome The Wall to our community. The Wall will be assembled by local veterans groups on October 8th, and on October 9th the opening ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM. Congressman Wittman, General Zinni and new Colonial Williamsburg President Mitchell Reiss will speak. A Marine Color Guard, led by the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums, will present the colors, and the Combined Veterans will lay a wreath at the conclusion of the ceremony. The Wall will be open to the public 24 hours a day. On Saturday October 11th the Williamsburg Library will show the documentary Return With Honor at 2:00 PM. Allan Carpenter, a Hanoi POW, will speak about his experience and comment on the documentary. On Sunday October 12th a memorial event will be held at The Wall at 3:00 PM. Langley AFB Airmen will perform a narrated flag folding ceremony, and the flag will be presented to Gold Star Mother Jennie Green whose son, 1st Lt. Douglas Green, was killed in action in Vietnam on January 11, 1968. Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums will perform, and students from Jamestown High School will read the names of 1307 Virginians listed on The Wall. The closing ceremony will be at 3:00 PM on Monday October 13th. The Langley AFB Honor Guard will present the colors, and Williamsburg Mayor Clyde Haulman will speak. The Wall That Heals and the accompanying museum are sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Trust, Federal Express, Geico and Time Warner. Local sponsors for the Williamsburg visit are the City of Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Colonial Williamsburg and the Combined Veterans Organizations Committee consisting of American Legion Posts 39 and 1776, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 34, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts 4639 and 8046 (and auxiliaries), and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 957 (and associates). This year is the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and it is our opportunity as a community to honor the memory of those who lost their lives while serving the country during that conflict..
