THE WAY, WAY BACK: I wasnt too sure about this coming-of-age flick for the first third or so, during which our protagonist is a real lump, but then it suddenly takes a hard turn into completely charming. Sam Rockwell is wonderful as the grown-up friend every 14-year-old boy (and probably a lot of girls) absolutely needs, and the film itself plays like a lot of the lightweight summertime popcorners from the 80s that I still love -- think Mark Harmons SUMMER SCHOOL -- wrapped around a serious, poignant character drama. A great little movie... it even has me thinking it might be fun to visit a waterpark again, and I havent wanted to do that since I was the age of this films protagonist!
