THE following measures are suggested for the authorities concerned for Ramazan so that it makes life easier for all people during the holy month. a. Constitute a committee to freeze the prices of daily-use commodities, especially fruits, vegetables, dairy items, all types of meat, and all items connected with fasting. b. Keep law and order strictly under control. Widespread vigilance must be kept with the help of police mobiles and CCTV cameras. c. Keep the sanctity of Ramazan by creating harmony in the different sects and faiths through scrutinising volatile speeches of Ulema, using the pulpits of mosques and electronic media. d. Mosques and all worshipping places where Tarawi is held should be closelywatched by security guards etc. Rangers and police must be deputed at all sensitive places to avoid sectarian fallout and terrorist attacks. e. A joint team of rescue workers, municipal services, fire brigade along with necessary equipment should be deployed in the vicinity of troubled areas to reduce reaction time. Besides, they should remain on alert 24/7 to meet any emergency. f. Extra traffic police personnel should be deputed during Ramazan so that people don`t get stuck in traffic jams just before Iftar. g. Hospitals (both government and private) should depute reserve beds with the medical teams available to meet any emergency situation. h. Effort should be made to coordinateloadshedding and water scarcity as the two are interlinked. Besides, both power and water are needed the most around Sehri and Iftar. i. Immediately before and during Ramazan beggars from all over Pakistan arrive in large numbers to Karachi and establish their camps in playgrounds, on footpaths, along the railway line and under flyovers. An anti-beggary drive must be launched ruthlessly in coordination with Edhiand other NGOs to ensure `professional` beggars are caught. j. Generally, Iftar is arranged by many philanthropists and NGOs to provide relief to the low-paid strata of society. These places must be protected and kept under watch so that people involved in this noble cause deliverwithout fear. k. Unanimous opinion should be obtained by religious leaders to avoid confusion at the last moment regarding sighting of the moon on Chand Raat.
