THE tuna industry will be the focus at the opening of the 6th International Conference on Agribusiness Economics and Management set on September 2-3 in Davao City. University of the Philippines president Alfredo Pascual will give a welcome message at the conference, which carries the theme Agribusiness for Sustainable Development: Building Synergies and Expanding Horizons. Dr. Arthur Mol, professor of environmental policy at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, will give the keynote talk on Ecological Modernization and Shifting Environmental Authorities. A plenary panel session will follow on BESTTuna Program: Benefiting from Innovations in Sustainable and Equitable Tuna Management in the Coral Triangle and Western Pacific, which is funded and headed by Wageningen University, in partnership with UP-Mindanao, UP-Visayas, Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia, the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, and World Wildlife Fund Indonesia and the Philippines. UPMins contribution to this international program is a multidisciplinary research on Sustainable Development of the Philippine Tuna Value Chain funded by the Commission on Higher Education through its Higher Education Regional Research Center (HERRC) for Davao Region. Research in tuna is especially relevant for Mindanao not only because of the commoditys economic value as the second-largest export of the island but also because the sustainability of tuna fisheries is currently at risk. ICAEM Day 2 will feature research reports on community development, rice, banana, livestock and poultry, social issues in agriculture, sustainable interventions, sustainable design, production and processing, crop production, organic farming, marketing and consumer studies, and future crops. Among the international experts who will give talks in Icaem 2014 are Dr. Paul Van Zwieten, Dr. Simon Bush, Dr. Rolf Groeneveld, and Dr. Jim Cavaye. Other international institutions represented are University of Technology Sydney and University of Queensland in Australia, Federal University of Technology and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Nigeria, University of California Santa Barbara, USA, Hanoi University of Agriculture in Vietnam, Universidad del Pacifico in Peru, Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus, and Blantyre District Agriculture Office in Malawi.
