THERE IS POWER IN OUR LITTLE IDEAS Man is the only creature that is endowed with the gift of ratiocination by the creator. He is the only animal that can reason, plan, reflect, construct and achieve great endeavors because of his exceptionality thus he is called a rational animal. No wonder the Igbo nomenclature for man “mma ndu -the beauty of life”. By implication, the whole universe has no beauty if it is devoid of man. But we feel sorry to observe the incommensurable output of some individuals who share in this humanity (man) identity of rationality, as the characteristics of rational beings is found lacking in their daily living. One of the attribute of rationality is the ability to form ideas. Ideas exist in the mind as representation or as formulation. It may be formed from something known or imagined, thus it is a product of the internal senses combined with the external senses. Despite our level of education we all have the ability to form ideas no matter how little it may be just as we all have the natural ability to reason logically even before we attend our first logic class. But the kind of ideas in us at this point is mostly that of what is to be done, which most often when we dare tell others about it, they laugh us to scorn, but these have being the ideas that have shaped our world today. Image around 1885 of Wilbur and Orville Wright telling their contemporary about the possibility of flying an airplane I have the feeling that they might have made fun of the two brothers but there believed in their idea and made history in 17 December 1903. The way you fashioned your brain is the way it will work for man is the product of his thinking. It’s left for us to think and dare to put our thought into action and we are on the way to greatness. We should not underestimate the power of our little ideas for it is a treasure God has given to us. Forget the word “Little” attached to it, for sure every idea is great, and this great idea becomes fruitful when you back up it with action. As we all know, the worst regret students do have is failing the question they feel they know too just because of the bandwagon mentality no wonder Abraham Lincoln in his letter to his sons teacher advised his sons teacher to stir his son away from the band wagon mentality and to stand his position. Taking it further For instant Albert Einstein who developed the general theory of relativity, changed the world in 1905 when he discovered the world most famous equation; E = Mc2, whereby E is energy, M is Mass and C is the speed of light squared. He created the transition from Newtonian physics to Einstenian physics as before him humanity was held spell bound by Newtonian physics and the physics world can never forget him despite the fact that his famous equation indirectly contributed to the development of atomic bomb. All these are simply the products of ideas which have transformed the world. We have all being endowed with such create ideas by our creator, we have ideas of how to make this world a better place, for instance we have ideas of how to make Nigeria better especially Igbo land, I feel ashamed whenever I recall the fact that, our much enjoyed local food “fufu- (akpu)” is still prepared the same way our forefathers prepared it by pounding it in a mortar with a pestle as we are yet to invent a machine that can pound it, may be because the white man does not have it in his menu. We are also yet to invent a machine that can cut down our palm fruit heads whenever they are due for harvest but this is one of our major bush allowances and rural dwellers source of income. Aren’t we tired of bowing down in shame whenever these kinds of cases are raised? Have we run out of ideas? Are we afraid to dare? As a child, we all had dreams which were geared toward greatness in the future, are these just fantasies? These dreams cannot be materialized if we do not dare to practicalize them, and this calls for hard work and believing firmly in ourselves and our ideas. We strongly believe that the sky will be our limit if we allow our little ideas to come to reality. We challenge all and sundry to brace up, put into practice those wonderful thought we have in mind, for posterity will condemn all those who are not willing to dare and make life easier for humanity. Let us avoid procrastination for it have killed many great minds and will continue to mar many potential great minds. For the law of Nature is simply the law of give and take. Give the world the best and the best will come back to you. For one to be focused in any engagement in life, one has to have plans which serve as guidelines to their destination. Remember that your ideas are the pictures of your future. And many have failed to actualize their dream due to criticism, by criticism we mean the destructive part of it”. Just know this: you cannot survive without criticism both destructive and constructive ones. For There must come to us on our way to greatness. All we have to do is to welcome them as part of life and then take the necessary lesson you need in other to move on with life better. Remember not to be afraid to do something reasonable just because you are nervous of what people will say about it. Know clearly from today that you are unique and irreplaceable. Develop your little ideas to their fullness so that your God giving vocation will not be found wanting. By Nnagboro Kizito
