THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON (1941) A highly ambitious, fictionalized and romanticized account of the life of General George Armstrong Custer, from the time he enters West Point military academy, through the American Civil War, and finally to his death at Little Big Horn. This western film was directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. This film represented was the eighth and final screen pairing of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, a fact that lends poignancy to their classic parting scene. Though an extremely long film, it is never dull, especially during the spectacular Custers Last Stand. It was one of the top-grossing films of the year. Film grossed $2.55 million for Warner Bros. Pictures in 1941, making it the studios second biggest hit of the year. The score was composed by Max Steiner. Warner Brothers recycled some of the music from the film and it, or variations of it, can be heard in Silver River and Rocky Mountain, both starring Errol Flynn.
