THEY may have survived the collapsing building but they probably won’t escape the law. According to Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela, people who were trapped under the rubble when a building collapsed in Power Park, Soweto on Wednesday could face charges of theft. Makhubela said if the owner of the building didn’t give the survivors permission to enter the building, they will be charged. Yesterday, a rescue team resumed its search and rescued five people. One person died on Wednesday. Many people arrived at the scene to find out if the victims trapped under the rubble were members of their family. Nonzuzo Ngwadla said her nephew recently came to Joburg from KZN. “Our neighbour called my nephew and said he was going to find him a job in a steel factory. But it’s not a real job,” she told Daily Sun. Joburg EMS spokeswoman Nana Radebe said the rescue team managed to rescue the man who was trapped under the rubble. “We had to amputate his arm to get him out. He was taken to Baragwanath Hospital at about 3am yesterday morning,” she said. In spite of all that was happening, there were still people looting and taking metal from the already collapsed building. Makhubela told the People’s Paper the police are monitoring the area to stop those still looting. “One person has been taken in for questioning about looting this morning,” he said.
