THINKING OF DECLARING THE FGS MAJOR OR MINOR? If so, NOW is the time! Currently declared majors/minors will soon be electing the 2014-2015 Student Advisory Council (SAC)! The SAC ballot will be finalized on Monday, February 3, so you must be declared by then in order to be eligible. What’s the Student Advisory Council? Please see the attached document for more information. In 2011, the Feminist & Gender Studies Program (FGS) developed the Student Advisory Council (SAC). This organization provides majors and minors the following opportunities to serve as leaders within the Program (new opportunities/obligations are bolded): --SAC members will take turns attending FGS business meetings conducted on the first Thursday of odd-numbered blocks starting with The Monthly Rag Editor in Block 1 and ending with the Editor in Block 7. Attending these meetings will give members the opportunity to learn about FGS administration more intricately and intimately. It is also a space that allows members to represent and present the interests and concerns of the FGS student body to the faculty. --SAC members will submit at least one entry to The Monthly Rag each block. Entry ideas include, but are not limited to, interviews, articles, art, and creative writing. Members are also strongly encouraged to solicit entries from students, faculty, and staff within and outside of the official FGS community. --SAC members will promote and attend FGS scholarly lunches on the first Thursday of even-numbered blocks. --SAC members will help plan, advertise, and implement FGS programs, including, but are not limited to, film screenings, informational sessions, workshops, guest speakers, and student and/or panels on various topics. --SAC members will promote FGS using assorted marketing strategies, such as student-designed bookmarks, t-shirts, fliers, and brochures, especially during New Student Orientation, Homecoming Weekend, Winter-Start Orientation, Open House, alumni events, and pre-registration and registration periods. There may also be exciting opportunities for off-campus promotion. --SAC members will be funded, and expected to attend, the National Women’s Studies Association annual meeting. --SAC members may also be funded to attend the Feminist Boot Camp in New York City during the winter or summer, but may be expected to secure additional funding beyond FGS, including Venture Grants. --SAC members will develop and maintain networks with other academic, intellectual, artistic, and activist organizations as local as the WEST Program at UCCS and as national as the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The SAC will be comprised of one FGS major and one minor, as well as the Editor of The Monthly Rag. Questions concerning the SAC may be addressed to Heidi R. Lewis, SAC Advisor, at [email protected].
