THIS DATE IN MUNICIPAL STADIUM HISTORY AUGUST 16 1956—The A’s were swept in a three-game series for the second-straight time, 6-5 by the Chicago White Sox. Kansas City actually led this one 4-1 until the Sox struck for three in the top of the 4th. Larry Doby hit a solo homer for Chicago in the 1st inning. A—5,913. 1957—Rocky Colavito and Dick Williams each homered as the Indians beat the A’s 4-2. Mike Garcia struck out six for Cleveland in a complete game win. A—10,097. 1958—The Athletics took a high-scoring affair from Detroit 8-7. Roger Maris hit two doubles, one of which came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th to drive in three and put Kansas City up for good. A—11,713. 1959--The As took two of three from the White Sox with a 7-2 win in a Sunday matinee. Russ Snyder and Preston Ward each homered and Ned Garver pitched a complete game for the win. A--13,373. 1962--Kansas City completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Senators with a 4-2 win. Starter Ed Rakow went the distance and allowed just four hits, while George Alusik and Haywood Sullivan each had three hits for the As. A--3,135. 1963--The Orioles edged the As 4-3. Soon-to-be-Athletic Jim Gentiles solo homer in the top of the 5th turned out to be the difference in the game, won by Baltimore starter Dave McNally. KC starter Orlando Pena saw his season record drop to a lowly 8-17. A--9,004. 1964--The Athletics bungled their way to an 11-5 loss to the Tigers, committing FIVE errors along the way. Two of those came in the top of the 3rd inning, as Detroit scored five runs (all after two outs were recorded), including a 3-run homer by Don Wert. Jim Gentile homered twice for the As and Rocky Colavito also went yard, but a familiar name, Dave Wickersham, threw a complete game for the visitors, picking up one of his 19 wins in 64 as a Tiger. A--9,174. 1969--The Royals and Red Sox split a rain-induced twi-night doubleheader, as Boston took a 10-1 blowout in game one, and KC won the second game 8-7. Boston jumped all over the Royals with five runs in the 5th inning and rapped out six doubles in the game (two each by Carl Yaztrzemski and Rico Petrocelli) and George Scott hit a 3-run homer off losing pitcher Bill Butler. The Royals lost to Boston for the 6th-straight time and failed to take advantage of the nine bases on balls allowed by Red Sox starter Mike Nagy (three of which went to Ed Kirkpatrick). In the second game, Kansas City scored four in the 2nd inning and led 6-2 after six, but the Sox made things interesting with a 4-run 8th and added one more run in the top of the 9th before Galen Cisco recorded his first save as a Royal. Pat Kelly homered and drove in three runs and Buck Martinez hit a solo shot and Yaz homered for the first time ever vs. the Royals. A--15,278. 1972--There was one first and a few lasts on this night as the Royals defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 in the Bronx Bombers final appearance ever at 22nd & Brooklyn. John Mayberry singled home Cookie Rojas in the bottom of the 7th to break a 2-2 tie. It was the Royals 6th-striaght home win and their first three-game sweep ever of the Yanks. Roger Nelson struck out seven as he out-dueled NYs Fritz Peterson and both men pitched complete games and Bobby Murcer hit the final NYY homer at the old ballpark. The Yankees finished an astounding 97-56 all-time at Municipal Stadium--far and away the best record of any visiting team. They were 84-45 vs. the As and 13-11 vs. the Royals. 1972 was the Yankees worst season ever at Municipal, as they went 1-5 for the year, and the only other losing season they experienced in KC was, ironically, the final one with the As in 1967 when they were 4-5 at Municipal. A--11,579.
