LOCALLY IN BUSINESS HISTORY 1.The General Assembly of the League of Nations meets in Geneva for the first time Ngonyakaka1920, the General Assembly of the League of the Nationsmet in Geneva, Switzerland for the first time. The League was an international body founded as a result of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. Having installed its Secretariat in the Palais Wilson, the League made a mark on the urban landscape of Geneva by constructing the Palais des Nations in which the League was installed in 1936, three years before the outbreak of World War II. On 26 June 1945, delegates from fifty countries met in San Francisco where they adopted the Charter of the United Nations(UN). Three months later the UN was officially launched when the signatory countries ratified the Charter. South Africa was one of the original founding members of the UN in 1945. In April 1946, the League of Nations handed over its properties and assets to the UN, the Palais des Nations being one of its jewels. 2.Sculptor Lucas Sithole is born in KwaThema Ngonyakaka1931 LucasSithole, renowned South African sculptor, was born in KwaThema, Springs, Transvaal (now Gauteng) to a Zulu father and a Swazi mother. He created more than 800 sculptures in wood, stone liquid steel and bronze. Sithole often used to give an explanation why he made his sculptures. As one of South Africas best known sculptors internationally, about 200 works are in collections in the Americas and Europe. 3.South African anti-apartheid activist Ronnie Kasrils is born in the Johannesburg Ngonyakaka 1938 South African anti-apartheid activist Ronnie Kasrils was born in the Johannesburg suburb of Yeoville. The Sharpeville massacre and its aftermath drew him closer to the African National Congress (ANC). He was renowned for perfectly executing tasks entrusted to him by the leadership of the party. He was a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He personally executed acts of sabotage. Kasrils was constantly on the run from government law enforcement agencies. In 1963, he skipped the country to Dar es Salaam. He has travelled to several foreign countries on ANC missions. After the countrys first democratic elections in 1994, he was appointed as a minister of Defence in President Nelson Mandelas Cabinet. He later became minister of Water Affairs and Forestry under President Thabo Mbeki. He served his second term in Mbekis cabinet as minister of Intelligence. 4.RDP White Paper is tabled in George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic Ngonyakaka, 1994 The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) White Paper, which was put before the parliament, called for an expeditious programme to ensure that the civil service is more representative in terms of ethnic group and gender. It also proposed the use of affirmative action to reverse imbalances that existed in the public service and further called for a review of the present rules governing qualifications. 5.BafanaBafana loses to Germany Ngonyakaka 1997 South African soccer team BafanaBafana played against the German national soccer team in an international friendly match, in Dusseldorf in Germany. The game was part of BafanaBafanas preparations for the World Cup games to be held in France the following year. The South African team was under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed soccer coach Clive Barker. The game in Dusseldorf was the second for these two teams. Their first meeting was in 1995 in Johannesburg and ended in a 0-0 stalemate. This was a game between two continental champions. Germany was the reigning European champion while BafanaBafana had won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996. However, Germany had the upper hand over BafanaBafana on the day and won the game by three goals to nil. Dieter Hamann, Oliver Bierhoff and Joerg Heinrich scored for the Germans. The first goal was scored in the 13th minutes with a long range shot. The second and the last goals were scored in 34th and 69th minutes respectively.
