THIS DAY IN HISTORY (SEPT 18): 1998 - Then South African President Nelson Mandela celebrated his 80th birthday and married Graca Machel, widow of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique. 2012 - Jamaican-American Poet, critic, and educator Louis Simpson born on March 27, 1923, passed away on September 18, 2012. Born in Kingston, he migrated to the United States in 1940. He won the 1964 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his work At The End Of The Open Road. Simpson was the son of Rosalind (née Marantz) and Aston Simpson, a lawyer. His father was of Scottish and African ancestry. His mother was born in Russia. Simpson did not find out that she was Jewish until his teenage years.
