THIS IS NOT A RANT - THIS IS NOT ABOUT MAN-BASHING. THIS IS MY OPINION. Thank you. No hate mail, but a civil dicsussion, if you will. SO: Most of you who know me well, know that I am a certified victim advocate, working with women and children who have been victimized. This weekends tragedy in California doesnt surprise me, and it probably doesnt surprise most women. I bet most men are saying, hey this guy was a freak and I dont believe in violence or abuse of women. And for the most part, I believe that to be true. But did you know that when your buddies make suggetive or overt comments that might be embarrassing, and you have laughed and called your pal a horn dog, it is abusive? Do you know that whistling, leering and taunts are abusive and that they scare women? If you dont shut down that behavior from your pal, you condone it. I believe my friends here are good people who mean no one any harm. But just for kicks and grins, I thought Id share this Slate op/ed piece with you and see if you recognize anyone. If you do, be aware that you are perpetuating abuse and harassment of girls and women as well as modeling behaviors to your sons and daughters. It is true that boys and girls are socializeddifferently and what you say and do CAN make society as better place to love for both genders.
