THIS IS OUR MUSIC: VIOLENT FEMMES – “Kiss Off”. Perhaps the greatest encapsulation of teenage-geek angst the Violent Femmes ever performed, “Kiss Off” was by turns funny, playful, vulnerable, heartbreaking, combative, furious, self-conscious, despairing, hopeful, and hopeless. It’s no mean feat to wedge such emotional complexity into a song less than three minutes long, especially a song with one, maybe two sections that might be considered verses. Like the rest of the group’s now-legendary 1982 debut, “Kiss Off” is simple, ragged, acoustic folk-rock, but it hits with a gut-churning, deeply cathartic intensity. Singer Gordon Gano can switch from a quivering murmur to a plaintive wail in the very next line, or turn up the nasal quality of his voice when he wants to project more attitude. That flash of humor and spirit, popping up almost randomly in an oppressively bleak world, sums up the appeal of “Kiss Off” in a nutshell. .allmusic Follow – > songssmiths.wordpress/ Like -> facebook/songssmithssongssmiths
