THIS IS PRETTY MUCH A TRANSCRIPT OF THE VIDEO POST HERE FOR ANYONE - TopicsExpress

THIS IS PRETTY MUCH A TRANSCRIPT OF THE VIDEO POST HERE FOR ANYONE WHO FINDS IT EASIER TO READ RATHER THAN WATCH. This is just a quick post to catch up on the last week or so. The last post I was feeling as if things were not going as well as I had hoped, but today I’m feeling quite a bit better. I had been given four programmes with volume control from 1-10 on each until my next mapping session, and by the time we went back to hearing house on Friday I was at 4-10 and feeling really comfortable. Since I was remapped on Friday, I have been better again and am picking up more and more words I found I got quite a bit of crackling which was a bit annoying at first but now I don’t notice it because it has just morphed into the sounds I am hearing. I am hearing lots of things with my implant, I could hear Mum and Dad having a conversation in Mum’s office while I was in my room (a reasonable distance between the two) and I can hear footsteps outside my door even when it is shut. There’s just a bunch of sounds that I’ve never heard with my HA’s that I am now hearing with my implant. I am picking up some of the ling sounds (for those of you who don’t know what they are, it’s oo, ah, ee, sss, sh and mm). , M and E and O are still fairly difficult to hear and I often get them mixed up, but I’m hearing s and sh really well and that’s a sound I have not had with my hearing aids for years. Us Deaf kids have to practice these all the time with our implants and hearing aids so that we can get the main speech sounds stuck in our heads. People have started asking questions about Deafness and Implants, so I decided to answer them on my blog so other people who don’t know can know as well. One question I have been asked, is “what is habilitation”. Basically it is therapy for learning to listen and hear with your implant. So a trained habilitationist covers their mouth (not so it muffles the sound though) and challenges me to hear what they are saying, using the sounds I pick up and the rhythm of the words (whether it’s one or more syllables). We do tons at home and once a week with my habilitationist. The other thing I have been asked is “what is a cochlear implant”. That’s hard to answer simply but basically it is an electronic device with electrodes implanted into your cochlear and it sends electrical stimuli to the auditory nerve. I just wanted to say if you have any questions, just message me or ask in the comments and I will answer them in a post. I will keep you anonymous.
