THIS IS REAL THEATER! I was out of town the night The Color Purple opened so I just saw it tonight. OMG. Im almost glad Tony Farrell wrote the review because now I can rave about it and be emotional and not even think about being objective. This production is FANTASTIC. I was speechless and in tears by the end. Miss Celie (Felicia Curry) is small but POWERFUL. Nettie (Katrinah Carol Lewis), Mister (Jerold Solomon), Harpo (Josh Marin), and Sofía (Desiree Roots Centeio) pulled me into their world in rural Georgia. I could almost smell what they smelled and taste what they ate. And I want a pair of Miss Celies pants!!! Costume designer Sue Griffin made everyone (shape and size) look fabulous in them. People will be talking about The Color Purple for a long time. This is absolutely excellent theater. Now, you see, I would have been no good writing the review. I have no objectivity whatsoever. I loved this show. O. M. G. I have seen many shows directed by Chase Kniffen and many shows choreographed by Leslie Owens-Harrington, but they have both outdone themselves. One more thing: I saw people in the audience I have NEVER seen in ANY of the Richmond area theaters before! I hope they come back to see more of what the Richmond theater community has to offer. I am originally from NY (Brooklyn, to be exact) and I reviewed dance and theater in NY for more years than I have lived in Richmond (17) and one of the things that I love about Richmond is that I get to see as much theater here as I did in NY (not enough dance, but were working on that, too). P.S. Thank you Desiree Roots Centeio, Katrinah Lewis, Josh Marin, Amanda S. Montague, Karla Brown, Billy Dye, J. Ron Fleming, Thomas E. Nowlin. You guys were great - as always - and then some!
