THIS IS SO SAD! Dear Zane, Im 17 yrs old. My brother from my dads sides brother from his moms side got shot & killed last saturday. My brother put a status up on fb & ig. I txtd my brother that I was srry for his loss. Me & my brotha always txt each otha but we neva rlly call each otha that much. We rlly aint that close but I do love my brotha. Anyway my mama was fussin me out cuz I aint call my bro. I txtd him but she told me that my generation dnt knw how to communicate with each otha. She said that we r too hooked on phones. She dnt thnk that txtin is communication but I beg to differ cuz it is. I dnt like tlkin on the phone that much. Whats the big deal if I txt my brotha we aint that close anyway even tho I love him still? Anyways his brotha who died didnt really like me so I dnt wanna go to his funeral. My mama said that I should go to support my bro but idk. This would be the 7th person I knw to die this yr. My bffs sis got shot in the head last month & she died. My brotha died 3 yrs ago he got shot. Everybody is gettin shot n killed here in Chi-Town & Im so sick of these guns. Last wake I went to they did a drive by & shot it up. I got hurt tryna run away. Im so used to gunshots & ppl dying. I wont be shocked if I get shot & killed. I dnt even go out no more cuz my mama wont let me. I dnt wanna go to this funeral so why should I? What if they start shooting at his funeral & I die too cuz I dont wanna die yet. MY RESPONSE: Young Lady, I agree that the youth of today need to communicate more via phone and in person. However, as far as the funeral, if you are afraid that you may be killed (and you are), then you should have every right not to go. It saddens me to read your email and to read how you feel about the possibility of dying at any moment. Since you were not close to him, you should not have to attend. But you should call your brother instead of texting him to express your feelings, and to tell him why you do not plan to attend. I love you and I am going to keep you in my prayers.
