THIS IS TODAY’S ‘10s (2010s) SONG OF THE DAY, 10/25/2014: SONG TITLE: “The One That Got Away” ARTIST: Katy Perry ALBUM: Teenage Dream RELEASE DATE: October 4, 2011 GENRE: Pop FAST FACTS: Directed by Floria Sigismondi the music video features an elderly Perry reminiscing about her old flame (played by Mexican actor Diego Luna) through flashbacks. The lyrics feature references to the rock band Radiohead as well as the relationship of Johnny and June Carter Cash to express the strength of the relationship. It was the sixth single to be released from the ‘Teenage Dream’ album. HOW ERICSSON COMMENTS IT: “Folks…this talented pop starlet with a lot of top-charting hits has turned 30 years old today and how about I throw a special ‘Song of the Day’ post to commemorate this latest occasion? If I can pick any Katy Perry song to listen to all day so I can post it right here then ‘The One That Got Away’ is it. I absolutely loved this mid-tempo pop ballad since the day I first heard it and when I hear it again I still enjoy it. It is easily danceable but due to its serious lyrics we can easily imagine it as slower and dance to it slowly. One who listens to the song lyrics and realizes it it’s a song about missing a lost love plus the best days for a couple before the relationship ended so fast. Watch the music video and then the whole story shows it all: when an elderly woman (Perry, in this case) is unhappy with her current marriage she looks back. This is a tragic love story of how dreams lived, crashed and burned amid discord, paint and a really nice black Mustang that took the boyfriend his final ride of his life. (That Mustang looked like it was all brand new but it shouldnt have crashed anyway. Maybe it was repaired back to shape once filming of the video was finished.) And due to its grainy ‘70s-looking screen quality plus its serious story tone it’s a really nice short film. Sometimes you promise someone forever but it doesnt work out that way and this video is an example of life. Those coming out heartbroken from the end of their relationships after his/her love left them would totally relate to this track. A lot of people have been through breakups like that; if it involved red paint that I assumed looked like ketchup when I first watched the video then that symbolizes a really bad breakup. And speaking of ketchup this really sums up the misheard lyric ‘Cause now I pay the fries’ (in place of ‘Cause now I pay the price’). Not only that misheard lyric totally amused me but I also couldnt help but think every time I see Diego Luna he looks just like a young Paul McCartney with his ‘60s hairstyle and mustache; he made a really fine appearance in his scenes. His pairing with Perry is a really perfect match onscreen considering they looked cute together when they were young and partying wild to live up their youthful lives. Perry, when young and still the same age when she is making music in real life and rocking out both in real and fictional lives while looking a lot like actress Zooey Deschanel with a rebellious streak, is a real fine woman with evoked her emotions very deep in the video. Here she was happy at first but loses her innocence once her boyfriend walks out. She did really pure acting in there both as her current (and younger) self and her elderly self; they are both sophisticated and stylish in their appearances. Thanks to the fine acting and singing plus a really powerful story line for the first time in my days of posting songs of the day I have never had such a really fun song post on my profile. Happy 30th birthday to you, Katherine Elizabeth Hudson.” https://youtube/watch?v=Ahha3Cqe_fk
