Your U.S. Representatives and Senators will be in your home states and districts until September 7. 1. Find your U.S. Representative, and find your U.S. Senators. 2. Pick one to visit, and arrange a meeting. 3. Go visit them. Heres what to say at your meeting. 4. If they do already support the Smarter Sentencing Act, thank them and tell them to ask their party leaders to bring the bill up for a vote! (Here are the current co-sponsors in the U.S. House, and thecurrent co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate.) 5. If they do not already support the Smarter Sentencing Act, ask them to become a co-sponsor! Give them this factsheet to convince them that sentencing reform is the right thing to do. The Smarter Sentencing Act, if passed, would reduce the length of federal mandatory minimum drug sentences by half, make the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 retroactively applicable to 8,800 federal crack prisoners, and expand the federal safety valve exception so that even more federal drug offenders dont have to receive mandatory minimum sentences. The bill would save billions of dollars, reduce overcrowding in federal prisons, and make our federal drug sentences much fairer. We have until December 31 of this year to try to pass the bill. This is the best chance weve had in years to pass a major federal sentencing reform bill. But lawmakers need to see your faces and hear you say it: Lets pass the Smarter Sentencing Act this year!
