THIS JUST IN: REST IN PEACE, JACK BRUCE, 71!~ WE HAVE LOST A GIANT! I saw Jack in concert six times, none were with Cream; three were with Ringos All-Starrs. The first time I saw him was in 1972 with West, Bruce & Laing at the Santa Monica Civic (if I recall correctly). I then saw him in1980, again at the Santa Monica Civic, in what was billed as Jack Bruce & Friends with drummer Billy Cobham, guitarist Clem Clempson (who replaced Peter Frampton in 1971 in Humble Pie), and keyboardist/guitarist David Sancious. They were billed a jazz or jazz fusion band. We were hoping to hear at least one Cream song & as it turned out we werent disappointed. They opened with White Room and more than half their set were Cream songs. The second time I saw him was real curio: a billing in 1990 with his lifelong nemesis, Ginger Baker, at the Hollywood Palace with Walter Egan. That night, Baker played on about half the songs while spending portions of various songs simply walking around the stage. Im sorry I missed his gigs with Robin Trower as they recorded several fine albums.
