THIS ONE IS OUR FAULT TOO It seems we have yet another fault line in our region to add to our already impressive collection of known faults. As part of NIWAs work of mapping our undersea fault lines, theyve pinpointed a previously unidentified one in Lambton Harbour, currently named the Aotea Fault. Its not surprising that there are some that have escaped notice before - were getting better at finding them as technology advances. Since having a good understanding of the regions risks is key to being able to manage the consequences, there will be more investigations into confirming the precise location and characteristics of this fault. To put things in perspective, the potential impacts of an Aotea Fault quake wouldnt be as significant as those from some of our known fault lines, and weve already designed our building standards to deal with those bigger events.
