THIS TODAY FROM NUMBERS USA ...: In addition to the somewhat encouraging news this week from House Speaker John Boehner, a growing number in Congress are beginning to realize that improving the economic outlook for working-class Americans, especially minority groups, is a better message than pandering to amnesty when it comes to immigration reform. A report from earlier this week in the Washington Free Beacon highlighted several comments made by Members of Congress preaching the negative impacts of high immigration levels on our countrys most vulnerable. This was a theme used by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) throughout the Senate battle. For the most part, his Senate colleagues left him on an island. His message, however, is gaining some traction in both the House and Senate. Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) has always been a strong voice on immigration enforcement. As mayor of Hazleton, Pa., he pushed through one of the countrys first local ordinances requiring businesses to use E-Verify. But the impact on jobs for Americas unemployed hasnt been a major talking point of his until just recently. Granting amnesty to untold millions of illegal immigrants will flood our job markets and reduce wages and employment for those hard-working immigrants and lower-income workers who have followed our laws. -- Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) The Washington Free Beacon report included key statistics from studies by the Center for Immigration Studies discussing the harm uncontrolled immigration has on jobs and wages, and it also included a recent study from the Economic Policy Institute highlighting the much larger number of unemployed workers in each field compared to job openings. Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) is another Member of Congress who has typically focused his attention on immigration enforcement, but has now included the impact of immigration on jobs into his talking points. [A]mnesty would allow individuals who have cheated the system and entered the country illegally to take jobs that could otherwise be filled by lawful citizens. -- Rep. Jones spokesperson Sarah Howard Were hoping that more in Congress choose the message of jobs, wages, and prosperity as a way to reach out to working-class Americans and minority groups instead of jumping on the amnesty bandwagon. The Washington Free Beacon isnt the only publication to pick up on this growing trend. Just a few weeks ago, the generally pro-immigration publication, The Weekly Standard, ran a story on Republican Senator Mike Lee, calling him a labor Republican because of recent statements, including some he made about the Gang of Eights amnesty bill. ------------------ HOW IN THE WORLD ALLOWING 11 MILLION ILLEGALS TO EVEN STILL BE HERE IS BEYOND ME. IF OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE WOULD DO HIS JOB -- ENFORCE EXISTING LAW (HE IS, AFTER ALL, THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE) -- THIS WOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE AT ALL. PERHAPS HE SEES ONE OF THOSE ILLEGAL ALIENS FOLLOWING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS AND BECOMING PRESIDENT. HMMM?
