THIS, TONIGHT, IS PROBABLY WHAT IS GOING TO BE AN ONGOING SAGA OF A NUMBER OF PISCES THAT HAVE COME TO GRACE OUR LIVES . . . It is a cautionary tale of cute, but cautiously coy koi . . . This afternoon we returned to visit our new friend in Cliffs Cove, Vinay, to pick up 37 more koi that he is expunging from his pond(s); yes, he has three huge ponds that flow into each other via waterfalls! He gave them to Ott along with ten others last week, but, in return, he and his wife are having us over for dinner one night for Ott to teach his wife how to cook Thai food! Sounds like an equitable exchange to me! I get to enjoy the fish and the delicious Thai cuisine too! Now I should hasten to add that the koi are very small! The entire 47 hes given Ott are only from about 2 to 4 inches long and about half of them are black, or virtually colorless. But theyre a start! That is, a start to add to the start of three fairly large ones we already had that had survived last winter. But wait, Im not through! Last Wednesday a shipment arrived containing fifty Butterfly Koi from Israel! Does that make them Jewish? If so, are they Orthodox, or Reformed? And, of course, since the fish from Cliffs Cove belonged to an Indian family, that probably makes them Hindu, doesnt it?! Oh, well, little does it matter for theyll all be savage heathens before long living with us rather than Buddhist or Christian even though a brass Thai Buddha sits lordly over the pond! But, forgive me, I digress! These fish were exquisitely colored ranging from almost iridescent orange to ivory white with black, orange and yellow splotches to sunburst yellow! Beautiful! But they too are small ranging from 2 to 3 inches long including their enormous butterfly fins and tails! And ALL of the small fish whether from the Cliffs Cove man, or from Israel, are audaciously private! They seek refuge in every crack and crevice of the rocks making it almost impossible to get a glimpse of them! Plus, add to the mix, a veritable swarm of fry that came from heaven-only-knows-where! Apparently one of the first ten bigger fish that the Cliffs Cove man gave us spawned right after we put them into our koi pond, or one of the three of ours that survived the winter spawned when they were transferred to the new koi pond; but whatever, they came from somewhere and are only the size of the black eye of a black-eyed pea! Miniscule! Nevertheless, they are brightly orange! Were afraid, however, that the bigger fish will eat the fry, yet, if they do, cest la vie! Thus, we now have something like 90 to 100 fish, plus innumerable fry, in the koi pond. We have discovered several deceased ones in the skimmer basket, so the exact number is rather vague, but close to one hundred at this point. Of course, most observers would surmise that we only have about ten to twelve since only the bigger ones show themselves most of the time! The smaller ones rarely! Thus concludes this episode of the ongoing saga of the koi of Wildwood Drive . . . other volumes will inevitably follow later . . .
