...THIS VOTE WAS NOT A VICTORY FOR ST MARYS CEMENT From Anne - TopicsExpress

...THIS VOTE WAS NOT A VICTORY FOR ST MARYS CEMENT From Anne Zukowski: St. Marys cement Community Advisory Committee held its last meeting - this is a brief summary (my observations, not the official version which will be written up and made public a later date.) Committee members were asked to rate what items they thought St. Marys should provide to the park/community in exchange for the swap (i.e. new ranger station, improved campsites, new north entrance, etc. etc. the list was long.) We were asked to rate them as to importance, with the understanding that St. Marys is under no obligation to accept the ideas, but will take them under advisement. I did not vote on any of these because I am opposed to any swap regardless of the bribes (oops, I meant perks). Some committee members felt uncomfortable voting yes to the swap without knowing what St. Marys was willing to propose. A third option was put on the table by a few committee members to wait until St. Marys makes a proposal -what exactly are they willing to offer? Then take that proposal to the community. This third option passed. I voted NO to the swap, no conditions, leave the park intact. I believe, however, that this vote was not a victory for St. Marys. They hand-picked the committee members and the facilitator, yet still could not get the outcome they wanted. This is far from over, however. St. Marys can still submit a plan to the DNR to take the north end of the park, so we need to stay vigilant. I urge everyone to attend the DNR open house meetings on November 3 (Monday) at the Charlevoix Library to discuss their management plan for Fishermans Island State Park. Voice your opinions to the DNR!
