THIS (very long post) IS ABOUT BEING REAL! TO MY FRIENDS and MARTIAL ARTS FRIENDS, WITH MUCH RESPECT! and perhaps with great controversy! HOW HONEST YOU? WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR PhD.? Your Dr. (Doctorate)? If you have a Doctorate, where did you get your Bachelors? or your Masters? From a U.S. Department of Higher Education accredited school? I wanted to share this bit of information from the U.S. Department of Education on the use of Letters/Tiles that refer to an Academic Degree. They are restricted by law. I received my PhD. after many years of hard work. First I earned my B.S. in Biochemistry 1977 (4 years of study), then earned my MA. in Chemistry 1981(another 3 years of study and active research), and then went back to school for my PhD. in Advanced Technology 1993 (specializing in Systems Science for another 6 years while I taught chemistry full-time at an accredited junior college - Broome Community College). My degrees came from an ACCREDITED INSTITUTION - The State University of New York at Binghamton. They have all my records and transcripts on file as well as employment records as I was a teaching assistant and a graduate assistant during my time there. The term Professor was also bestowed on me by the accredited institutions - Broome Community College and Ithaca College while I was actively teaching at those institutions. I NO LONGER USE THIS TITLE since I am no longer teaching at an accredited institution. DECEPTION only hurts us! Our entire martial arts industry! As a martial artist teaching the values of the martial arts - what does it say when you are using a degree, a title, that is not real? Letter Designation Restricted. A person shall not append to his name any letters [Dr., PhD., Ed.D., etc.] in the same form designated by the Commission on Higher Education as entitled to the protection accorded to an academic degree unless the person has received from a duly authorized institution of higher education the degree or certificate for which the letters are registered. For the purposes of this section, a duly authorized institution of higher education means an institution licensed by the Commission on Higher Education or an out-of-State institution licensed by the appropriate of any state agency and regionally accredited or seeking accreditation by the appropriate accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-secondary Education or the United States Department of Education. L.1986,c.87,s.3; amended 1994,c.48,s.36. 18A:3-15.4 There are many investigations and crackdowns occurring across the United States (and perhaps other countries such as Australia and more). I have read articles from the states of Maine, California and New Jersey where they have been investigating the use of fraudulent degrees and have through the courts required that many people, in the education and banking industries, remove the Letters they had attached to their names after getting a non-acredited diploma via a diploma mill. To me KARATE (martial arts) is about CHARACTER – SINCERITY – EFFORT – ETIQUETTE – SELF-CONTROL and within CHARACTER it is the HONESTY that I believe we all need to live up to and teach to our students! THANKS SO MUCH FOR LISTENING Enjoy Life! Doc H
