THOUGHT FOR TODAY TUESDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2014 ON THE OBSERVANCE OF PITRI PAKSH REMEMBERANCE OF OUR ANCESTORS. . . Today Pitri Paksh Begins : Pitri Paksh is a 15 lunar day’s period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings. It is observed during the month of Ashwin (September-October). At this time we remember the departed souls and pray for their welfare. During this period we must continue our daily worship. During this time special offerings are made to Almighty God on behalf of the ancestors. This act is called Shradh. The individual who performs Shradh should also observe a period of abstinence. The Garuda Puran states that both male and female can makes these offerings to God on behalf of the deceased( ch11. v13) The following can be done: 1) A kush grass is planted and a knot tied to the top. 2) A mixture consisting of water,white rice and black til is prepared. 3) The Devotee faces South and offers the mixture upon the kush grass,allowing the mixture to flow through the tumb and the index finger. The devotee may recite the following while doing Tarpan or making offering: 1) OM Pita Pitraya Tripyataam (Recite the name of the deceased father after Pita) O Lord, I make this Offering to Thee on behalf of my departed father. 2) Om Mata Pitraya Tripyataam (Recite the name of the deceased mother after Mata) O Lord, I make this offering to Thee on behalf of my deceased mother. 3) Om Sarva Pitraya Tripyataam O Lord, I make this offering to Thee on behalf of all departed souls. On the Final day Havan can be performed using ingredients such as black til,gugul,sugar, ghee sweet rice etc.The devotee may recite the following when making oferings into the fire: Om Pita Pitraya Svadha O Lord, I make this offering to Thee on behalf of my departed father. Om Mata Pitraya Svadha O Lord, I make this offering to Thee on behalf of my departed mother Om Sarva Pitraya Svadha O Lord, I make this offering to Thee on behalf of all departed souls. During this period it is advised that only obligatory rites should be performed. Wedding ceremonies, the construction of new buildings and the establishment of new buissness should be avoided. However, one must continue to pray throughout this period. OM NAMO BHAGAWTE VASUDEVAAYA . . .
