THOUGHTS OF CHRISTMASES GONE BY--------The magical night is upon us. We all hope everyone understands the reason for the holiday. That being said, in years gone by families would get together to swap names and exchange Christmas gifts, those practices are seldomly practiced nowadays. The Egg Nog celebration represented a cherished ritual. Little ones would first be offered the creamy delite topped with nutmeg. Shortly thereafter some magical potion was added to this Christmas Elixir much to the delight of all in attendance. All was well with the world.Wish list of little ones accompanied by a sense of contentment all seemed ready to bed down in anticipation of a visit from a Northern Intruder who flew with the aid of a legion of reindeer through the crisp winter skies.Christmas mornining would find little ones running around with a helmet aspiring to be a football player, one with a baseball glove with dreams of emulating Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. one with a Daisy B B Rifle seriously committed to the extinction of all neighborhood singing birds, one a cowboy with a holster on his hip popping sulfur smelling caps at every threatening indian who dared to threaten the neighborhood.Young ladies, far more reserved, were more likely to be having tea with Barbie and her friends. Make-up kits and paper dolls laid the foundation of what the future might hold in the way of dreams As it was when that magical potion was added to that Christmas Eve Elixir, things have indeed changed. That Christmas Eve celebration, gift swapping etc. is not as frequently practiced as in a wonderful past. The ensuing Christmas morning no longer finds Alabama /Auburn wannabes running around in red or white football helmets, no one aspires to be like Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays on Christmas morning. Even the feared neighborhood Audobon Slayer finds it to cool to sight in his Daisy Rifle. As I ride the streets of my hometown on Christmas morning the odor of sulfur from cap guns is nowhere to be found. The Willie Mays, Mickey Mantles,Auburn Tigers and Crimson Tide recruits are still in slumber. As I drive the streets on Christmas morning I sense a saddening void.Where is Barby, Ken,the linebackers, the halfbacks, the future Daniel Boones, the peoplle who made this a great place to live, Was it the magical potion that was added to the elixir? Surely not for I have tasted the same Let the Church say amen and Merry Christmas from the honest grinch
