THOUSAND ISLANDS LAND TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION – Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator Background: The Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is a regional community-based nonprofit organization founded in 1984 and incorporated as an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization in 1985. TILT’s mission is to conserve the natural beauty, diverse wildlife habitats, water quality and outdoor recreation opportunities of the Thousand Islands region, for present and future generations. TILT works with private landowners, community and government leaders, and various conservation partners to conserve flora and fauna, water and air quality, and our region’s important environmental features. The goal of TILT’s work is a greater quality of life, an improved foundation for the economy, and an enhanced environment. TILT has helped lead land conservation efforts in the Thousand Islands. Today, TILT protects over 8,200 acres of sensitive habitat, which supports the overall health of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem. TILT was awarded National Accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2009. Job Description: The Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator will administer and enhance its Preserve Stewardship Volunteer Program. Volunteer recruitment and retention, conducting training sessions and tracking volunteer participation are some of the responsibilities of this position. TILT is looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual who has a commitment to the organization’s mission, principles and values and has good interpersonal skills as well as enjoys working with people. Public education and engagement are both important elements of this position. The Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator will be working with the public regularly and cultivating volunteer relationships. In addition, the Coordinator will assist in the growth and further development of this new program. The Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator is a year-round, part-time, paid position. Tentative start date is early December, 2014. This position is exempt and is appointed by and reports to the Executive Director. The responsibilities of the Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following – Primary Responsibilities: Preserve Stewardship Volunteer Program Coordination 1. Recruit new volunteers to this program and re-engage with existing volunteers. 2. Assess volunteer interests and determine program placement (ie. Preserve Rangers, Creek Watchers, etc) 3. Conduct volunteer training sessions with assistance by Stewardship staff and interns 4. Follow the existing method of record keeping of volunteer information and reports generated by volunteers 5. Maintain open communication with existing volunteers for feedback and retention purposes 6. Document progress towards program goals using photography and written reports 7. Track program expenses against budget 8. Engage with local partners in program development and administration 9. Complete necessary grant reporting with TILT staff 10. Provide ideas for further program growth and development 11. Supervise Volunteer Program summer intern(s) Secondary Responsibilities: Additional Volunteer Coordination 1. Partner with Coordinator of Education & Outreach to recruit and coordinate volunteers for major events and Stewardship Days (Treks) 2. Organize volunteer appreciation event in August 3. Write news articles to promote trainings and recognize volunteer programs 4. Create flyers and other outreach materials for volunteer programming 5. Manage and write content for volunteer facebook group, email blasts, newsletters, etc. 6. Complete additional office duties as assigned Qualifications: 1. Bachelor’s degree (minimum) preferred. 2. Commitment to TILT mission, principles and values 3. Creative individual willing to collaborate and contribute ideas to the program 4. Enthusiastic, inspiring personality, enjoys working with people; willingness to work as a team with a wide variety of audiences, including staff, volunteers and interns 5. Effective public speaking skills; ability to communicate in an outdoor setting 6. Proficient writing and editing skills; ability to clearly convey information to the general public 7. Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask, adapt to change, work independently, and to prioritize effectively 8. Excellent computer skills; must be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, including power point, word and excel. Database management, social media and email blast experience preferred. 9. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends (weekly work schedule may vary). 10. Valid driver’s license and good driving record are required 11. Background in conservation and/or environmental education a plus. Working Conditions: The Stewardship Volunteer Coordinator will work outdoors and participate in trail walks and trail maintenance. Activities will occur on varied terrain and in variable weather conditions. Knowledge of the St. Lawrence River and boating experience is a plus.
