THREE ZAMBIAN ENTREPRENEURS NAMED SEMI FINALISIST IN THE GLOBAL GIST TECH-I COMPETITION AS PUBLIC VOTING BEGINS The Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative announces the launch of the public voting for the 2014 Technology Idea (Tech-I) Competition. Tech-I is an annual science and technology entrepreneurship competition, which this year accepted over 500 entries from 86 countries in the four areas of agriculture, energy, health, and information and communications technology (ICT). Internationally esteemed experts have selected the top 67 GIST Tech-I semi-finalists from 35 countries and now it is the global public’s turn to vote for the next big science and technology idea or startup! From Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria has the largest number of semi finalist with five, followed by Zambia with three. The three semi -finalists from Zambia are: Dot Com Zambia, represented by Mawano Kambeu, for their design of an intercity electronic bus ticketing system called Bus Tickets Zambia (ICT START-UP) Muchu Kaingu with m-Retailer, a cloud-based mobile application that interfaces with Point of Sale and Stock Management Systems to give better business insights to the retailer. (ICT- IDEA) Cholwe Sapwe with his invention of a self-reliable generator that has inbuilt self-charging system that allows it to run longer than a typical fuel or battery powered generator (Energy- IDEA) Public voting will determine which 30 semi-finalist teams from Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa advance to the Finals at the 2014 Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Marrakech, Morocco on November 18, 2014. During this prestigious event, these up-and-coming scientists and entrepreneurs will receive intensive skills training, mentorship, and networking access to global leaders in their fields. All finalists will receive up to 3 months mentoring following the finals. In addition, they are also competing for awards totaling $70,000 in funding. Members of the public are encouraged to view the video submissions and using a 5 star system to vote for their favorite entries. Their vote can help transform the lives of promising young science and technology entrepreneurs from around the world whose ideas and inventions can revolutionize life for everyone.
