THROW BACK THURSDAYS HISTORY LESSON: In 1926, much of North Miami Beach was called Fulford by the Sea and the Fulford-Miami Speedway was built as the worlds fastest race track with 50 degree banked turns where cars had to travel at least 110 mph to not slip off the track! (Todays Indy 500 has 32 degree banked turns). The first race drew 20,000 fans from around the country some paying as much as $15 per seat ($200 today) for the grueling 300 mile race around the 1.25 mile wood track. North Miami Beach (Fulford) was on its way to becoming the winter car racing capital of the world...but the winds of South Florida had other plans. The Great Florida Hurricane of 1926 (a category 4 hurricane) destroyed the racetrack after its one and only race. It would never be rebuilt and car racing would never be rooted in North Miami Beach! Stay tuned for more history next week...
