THUMBS UP TO GOMBE BULLS I was one of the spectators that troops into the Indoor Sports Hall yesterday cheering the state basketball team, Gombe Bulls. The team hosted Immigration from Kaduna in the first home match in the Premier League. The Bulls went on to comfortably win 74-43 with their best performance coming in the 4th quarter where the restricted the visitors to only three free-throw points. It wasnt really the margin of victory that impressed me most. The rebirth of basketball in the state came at a time when the state sports commission under Malam Farouk Yarma are striving hard to support all sporting events in a state where football dominated. Gombe Bulls have been in absolute obscurity before the sports commission got the backing of the government to resuscitate them back to the elite division. It was quite delighting to see sizable number of fans coming out to watch and cheer the team. This clearly indicate the game of basketball has regained its popularity in the state. Thanks to Gombe Bulls, thanks to the sports commission, thanks to the government of Gombe State.
