THURSDAY 14TH AUGUST 2014 NEWS HEADLINES • The Kasama’s One Stop Center has recorded about 700 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) from January to June this year. Center Coordinator, Andrew Chota attributed the increase in the cases of GBV to people who he said are relenting in their response to sensitization with regards to effects of the vice. He said that his office will however continue with the massive sensitization to ensure that all communities are fully enlightened on the vice to reduce on the cases. Mr. Chota also said he is delighted with the increase in the number of men seeking counsel in cases of spouse abuse. He has urged couples to seek dialogue in resolving conflicts in their homes as opposed to fighting which had serious consequences. ************************* • Kasama District Commissioner, Kalanga Bwalya has expressed displeasure at some people interfering with the works on the ongoing construction of Lukupa road. Speaking when he made a spot check on the road, Mr Bwalya charged that the move will delay the construction of the road. The visibly annoyed District Commissioner has since called on the residents of Lukupa and the surrounding areas to corporate with contractor working on the road. Mr. Bwalya said it will be costly to re-do the work if the road surface is damaged before the final works are complete. And Road Development Agency Regional Manager, Simon Chimondo expressed happiness at the quality workmanship being exhibited by the contractor. Mr. Chimondo was however quick to implore on the community to guard the road infrastructure jealously. ************************** • The Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company has reiterated its appeal to members of the public to safeguard the Company’s infrastructure in order for it to deliver quality services. Director Technical Services, Willard Mutoka appealed to the general populace to give goodwill to the Company by taking care of its property. Mr. Mutoka who was flanked by his Project Manager Lackson Simumba said the water utility company was working to erect a new fire fence at the water treatment plant which has been vandalized. He also disclosed that works to rehabilitate and electrify the old water treatment plant at a cost of K835, 000 is underway. Mr. Mutoka further appealed to government to consider assisting Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company with financial support to enable it operate effectively. *************************** • DMI St. Eugene University of Lusaka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kasama’s Chifwani Skills Training Centre to mount Diploma and Degree courses for about 200 teachers in Northern Province. Speaking during the official opening of DMI St. Eugene University E-Learning Diploma and Degree program at Chifwani skills training centre, Kasama Archdiocese Vicar General, Fr. Ives Bantungwa described the program as a landmark in the history of education in Kasama. Fr. Bantungwa stated that the development underscores the contribution of the Catholic Church to education development in the country. Meanwhile, Fr Bantungwa has appealed to the university management to revisit its plans of constructing a campus in Mbala saying the offer still stands. ************************ • The Green Environment Watch has expressed concern at the failure by Government to fully utilize funds provided by the European Union–EU to support climate change programmes. Organisation Director of Programmes, Choolwe Milambo has charged that is disappointing to learn that government has failed to use the money it was given for the last three years for climate change programmes. Mr. Milambo added that it is sad that at the time when the country is supposed to be responding to climate change issues, government has failed to use the resources made available for such programmes. He lamented that one of the challenges being faced by climate change implementers in the country is lack of resources. Recently, Vice President Dr. Guy Scot disclosed that government has failed to fully utilize funds provided by the EU for climate change programmes. ****************************** • Kasama law maker, Geoffrey Mwamba has charged that President Michael Sata means well for the country. Addressing scores of residents from Kasonde Mutukwa, Bululu, Lukupa, Chilunga and Kateshi at separate meetings yesterday, Mr. Mwamba said that it is for this reason that the nation ought to rally behind President Sata. He also called on the people of Kasama and the country at large to pray for the well-being of the republican president, who he said is now enjoying good health. Mr. Mwamba who is popularly known as GBM has since hailed the people of Kasama Central for electing him and Mr. Sata as Member of Parliament and president respectively. ************************* • A civil society organization has commended Kasama central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba for donating his gratuity to his constituency. Open Society Foundation Executive Director, Sunday Chanda said there is need for parliamentarians to take a leaf from the gesture by the Kasama law maker. Mr. Chanda stated that Members of parliament should care for their constituencies and be in a position to share part of their earnings with the community. On Sunday during a live program on Radio Mano, Kasama central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Bwalya announced that he has donated his entire gratuity to his constituency to speed up development in the area. ************************** • Prisons Care and Counseling Association has urged government to come up with sensitization programmes for Prisons officers on symptoms of the deadly Ebola virus. Association Executive Director, Geoffrey Malembeka said this is in view of the fact that some illegal immigrants from different countries are detained in various prisons. Mr. Malembeka said it is important that prisons officers have some knowledge of the deadly disease which has hit West Africa claiming over one thousand lives. Mr. Malembeka noted that with the crackdown on illegal immigrants government has embarked on through the ministry of Home Affairs, it is important that screening is also done in prisons considering that these people are potential carriers of the disease as most of them come from west African countries. He charged that no institution should be left out when it comes to sensitization and screening for Ebola for the sake of preventing the disease. *********************** • The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Kenya as a high-risk country for the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. A WHO official said Kenya was vulnerable because it was a major transport hub, with many flights from West Africa. This is the most serious warning to date by the WHO that Ebola could spread to East Africa. Health experts are battling to contain the outbreak in West Africa, where it has killed more than 1,000 people. In Sierra Leone, a doctor who treated patients infected with Ebola has died, reports the BBCs Umaru Fofana from the capital, Freetown. Dr Modupeh Cole is the second Sierra Leonean doctor to die of the disease. In Nigeria, Africas most populous state, a third Ebola-related death was reported on Tuesday. Yesterday, Canada said it would donate up to 1,000 doses of an experimental Ebola vaccine to help fight the outbreak. *********************** • Meanwhile, the Rwanda Football Federation-FERWAFA has written to African footballs ruling body over worries about the threat of Ebola in Nigeria. Rwanda is due to play the Super Eagles in Calabar on 6 September in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Rwanda Football Federation boss Vincent Nzamwita said the federation is waiting to see if CAF can change the game. He added the federation is also getting direction from the government of Rwanda. So far there have been three confirmed deaths from Ebola in Nigeria. The other two teams in Group A alongside Nigeria and Rwanda are South Africa and Sudan. ******ENDS******
