THURSDAY 23RD JANUARY 2014 MORNING NEWS HEADLINES • Northern Province Education Officer, Ngosa Kotati has bemoaned the poor performance of Grade 9 pupils who sat for their exams in 2013 in the region. Mr Kotati disclosed that the region came out on eighth position out of the country’s ten provinces representing a 47 percent pass rate as compared to 34 percent in 2012. ******************************************************************** • But the Basic Teacher Union of Zambia BETUZ Northern Province chapter has attributed the low pass rate of grade nine examinations to strict measures put across to curb leakages in the region. Regional BETUZ Chairperson, Obby Chisala has since called on parents and other stakeholders not to blame teachers for the poor results recorded by the Grade 9 pupils who sat for their exams in 2013. ******************************************************************** • The department of Social Welfare in Mbala District in Northern Province has disbursed over K27, 000 to seven vulnerable individuals as capital for income generating projects under the new social protection fund programme. Speaking during the district welfare assistance committee first quarter meeting, District social welfare officer, Fredrick Chilambwe said the office has received K24, 000 under public welfare assistance scheme saying 80 percent of the funds will go towards education support to orphans and vulnerable children. ******************************************************************** • A 70 year-old man of Nakonde District of Muchinga Province has been shot dead by unknown people on suspicion of practicing witchcraft. Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner Bonny Kapeso confirmed the incident to Zambia News and Information Services in Chinsali yesterday and identified the deceased as Menson Simpamba.
