THURSDAY, April 17 Maundy Thursday John 13:14. You also ought to wash one another’s feet. A few years ago, I traveled to New Orleans for a mission trip to help rebuild a city brought to its knees by hurricanes and flooding. When we arrived at the work site, I was assigned to sanding duty. The group before had hung the drywall; the group after would paint. But our job for the week was sanding. It’s tedious and tiresome to sand drywall for eight hours. And there’s not a lot of satisfaction. You don’t often stand back to admire the work of a very smooth wall. In Jesus’ day, washing feet was considered a menial task, most often delegated to servants. It certainly wasn’t a job for the Lord. Yet Jesus knelt before each of the disciples, took water from a basin, rinsed their feet, and dried them with the towel from his waist. Sometimes, even when we’re doing God’s work, we want certain jobs, the ones that so obviously make a difference, the ones that make us feel good inside. But Jesus sets the example: No job is too small, too insignificant. Being in true service to others means we meet their needs, not our own.
