THe increase in 2012 has been wiped out by a 15% decrease in 2013. 5 percent more stayover tourists in 2012 SUNDAY, 3 MARCH 2013 14:21 WILLEMSTAD — Curaçao welcomed 419,778 stayover tourists in 2012 – a 5 percent increase – according to the interim figures from the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), which is 38,824 tourists compared to the 37,921 registered in the same period of the previous year.An increase in the number of stayover tourists was registered in all regions: South America with 42 percent; North America 12 percent; Europe 12 percent and the Caribbean area 5 percent. The number of nights spent on the island in the month December increased with 22 percent, amounting to 358,550 compared to 294,876 in 2011. The visitors’ profile compiled from information on the immigration cards gives an analysis of 56 percent of the cards, which is equal to 22.395 visitors. Of this group 76 percent indicated pleasure as the main purpose of the visit. With 47 percent of these visitors it regarded a first visit to the island, while 11 percent had visited the island before and 20 percent had visited the island two to five times. Europe An increase of 2 percent on stayover tourists is registered from the European market, with a total number of 14,179 visitors, compared to 13,858 in 2011. The island welcomed 11,058 tourists from the Dutch market (which CTB considers as its main market). “After the introduction of the direct flights of Air Berlin from Germany to Curaçao in November 2011, Germany (with approx. 82 million residents, (editorial office) is considered an upcoming market. An increase of 23 percent, 931 visitors from Germany, was registered in December 2012. This increase is of course also due to the marketing activities for the Air Berlin flights”, according to the statement from the CTB. South America The increase of South American tourists represents a total number of 13,695 visitors, compared to 12,602 registered in the same period in 2011. The CTB explained that the increase from this region is mainly due to the large number of visitors from Venezuela, when the island welcomed 9.870 tourists in December last year; an increase of 5 percent from that country. The number of visitors from Columbia increased with 2 percent (1.147) and from Surinam with 59 percent (995). The Brazilian market showed a decrease of 3 percent, with a total of 1,015 tourists. North America Curaçao welcomed 5 percent more stayover tourists (in total 6.910) from North America. A decrease of 7 percent is registered within the United States. In total, 5,462 Americans had visited the island. There were 2 percent less tourists from Canada, with a total number of 1,448. Caribbean area The number of stayover tourists from the Caribbean area decreased in December 2012 with 8 percent (3.193), compared to 3.466 tourists in 2011. In this period Curaçao welcomed 1,809 visitors from sister island Aruba, compared to the 1.941 registered in 2011. Cruise The cruise sector showed a decrease of 18 percent in December 2012.
