TIDS - ADB Timor-Leste Occasional Joint Seminar You are cordially invited to the TIDS - ADB Occasional Joint Seminar on: The Rise of Global Value Chains: Implications for Timor-Leste Speaker: Dr. Richard Pomfret Professor of Economics, University of Adelaide, Australia Synopsis In the global economy of the twenty-first century, few goods or services are produced in a single country. This seminar reviews the evolution and current status of global value chains (GVCs), focusing on East Asia. It will assess alternative measures of the significance of GVCs and of trade costs, and provide examples of countries successfully connecting their production networks into GVCs. It will conclude with discussion of the challenges and opportunities for developing Asian economies, particularly geographically disadvantaged island or land-locked countries, to connect to GVCs. About the Speaker: Dr. Richard Pomfret is Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has been Professor of Economics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced & International Studies in Washington DC, Bologna (Italy) and Nanjing (China), Concordia University (Montréal) and the Institut für Weltwirtschaft (Germany). He has held visiting positions at universities in Australia, Canada, China, France, Italy and the USA as well as adviser to the Australian government, the World Bank, ADB, OECD and UNDP. Pomfret also worked for the United Nations advising on macroeconomic policy for the Asian republics of the former Soviet Union. Pomfrets research centres on economic development and international economics. His books, include The Central Asian Economies since Independence (Princeton UP, 2006), The Age of Equality: The twentieth century in economic perspective (Harvard UP, 2011), Regionalism in East Asia: Why has it flourished since 2000 and how far will it go? (World Scientific, 2011), and, co-authored Trade Facilitation: Defining, measuring, explaining and reducing the cost of international trade (Edward Elgar, 2012). About TIDS: TIDS (formerly East Timor Study Group) is the first public policy research institute established in Timor-Leste since 2001. After active in public policy research, debate, and advocacy in the first seven years, the institute faced challenges after most of the senior staffs joined the government as members and advisers. In 2014, the Founder, Mr. Joao M. SALDANHA, Ph.D, Chairman, a Former Senior Policy and Research Adviser at the Ministry of Finance, Member of RDTL State Council (Concelho do Estado), Scholar at Harvard, Oxford, Australian National and Charles Darwin universities revitalized TIDS and back actively in public policy research, debate, and advocacy in Timor-Leste. TIDS has three main public policy programs, namely Democracy and Social Change, Economic Development, and Applied Science and Technology. The main languages used in the institute are Tetum and English with Portuguese and Bahasa to be used according to the needs. About ADB: ADB is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. Established in 1966, it is based in Manila and owned by 67 members—48 from the region. In 2013, ADB assistance totaled $21.0 billion, including cofinancing of $6.6 billion.
