TIME FOR “OVERSIGHT” OF CONGRESS’ LACK OF “OVERSIGHT”"Oversight" Because of the NSA controversy over records collections, we are learning that Congressional oversight is much less than meets the eye. Sunday’s Washington Post reported, “Critics with deep knowledge of the congressional oversight committees say lawmakers’ ability to regulate the sprawling and complex intelligence network provides only a limited check on executive power.” While government spying is the scandal de jure in a lot of Washington minds, it’s only a focus upon the elephant’s tail. The bigger story is that Congress does not provide adequate oversight with regard to ANYTHING ELSE the government does either. It’s one of the worst kept secrets in Washington and it’s getting worse. The same agencies that are the worse offenders of waste, fraud and abuse of their programs year after year are called up before Congress every year, criticized, and then ignored until the following year. Hundreds of billions of dollars are wasted on fraudulent payments alone. Also, today there are at least three major cover ups being carried out by the Administration in plain sight as Congress struggles to obtain relevant information from the Obamites. Although one of the main responsibilities of the legislative branch is to insure that the executive branch functions properly, both in its own conduct and in overseeing its programs, it does not do so. Part of the reason is that it can’t. - Fred Thompson
