TIME TRAVELING, JULY 26 1775 A postal system is established by the 2nd Continental Congress of the United States with Benjamin Franklin as the first postmaster general. 1788 New York becomes the 11th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. 1797 Future President (1825-29) John Quincy Adams, son of second President John Adams, marries Louisa Johnson in London, England. 1907 The “Chester,” the first turbine-propelled ship, is launched. 1908 U.S. Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte issues an order that creates an investigative agency that is a forerunner of the FBI. 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt seizes all Japanese assets in the United States in retaliation for the Japanese occupation of French Indo-China. Britain and the Dutch East Indies follow suit, with the result being Japan loses access to three-fourths of its overseas trade and 88 percent of its imported oil. Its oil reserves are sufficient to last only three years; half that if it goes to war. 1945 In the 11th hour of World War II Winston Churchill is forced to resign as Britains prime minister following his party’s electoral defeat by the Labour Party. It is the first general election held in Britain in more than a decade. The same day, Clement Attlee, the Labour leader, is sworn in as the new British leader. 1947 U.S. President Harry Truman signs The National Security Act which creates the National Security Council, the Department of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. 1948 Baseball legend Babe Ruth is seen by the public for the last time when he attends the New York City premiere of the motion picture, The Babe Ruth Story. 1948 President Harry Truman signs executive orders that prohibit discrimination in the U.S. armed forces and federal employment. 1984 Ed Gein, a murderer and grave robber infamous for skinning human corpses, dies of complications from cancer in a Wisconsin prison at age 77. He was arrested in 1957 after the remains of 10 women were found in his home, was declared mentally unfit to stand trial, and was sent to a state hospital in Wisconsin. Deemed fit enough to stand trial in 1968, he was found guilty and spent the rest of his days in a state facility. 1998 AT&T and British Telecommunications PLC announce they are forming a joint venture to combine international operations and develop a new Internet system. 1999 About 1,500 pieces of Marilyn Monroes personal items go on display at Christies in New York, N.Y. The items go on sale later in 1999.
