TIMING & TEMPO In my last discussion, I talked about the value of jam tracks. These usually contain a backup band to practice bass, rhythm, lead and singing against. A metronome can be used to improve timing and tempo too, but a small programmable drum machine adds a more realistic percussion accompaniment to your practice sessions. A drum machine is really a Devil in a Box because it relentlessly keeps banging out the beat, offering no sympathy for your timing mistakes, that erroneously speeds up or slows down your playing tempo. During Performance Practice, smooth over your mistakes to minimize the damage. Dont draw undue attention to yourself. Later, go back and practice passages or techniques that need extra work. Initially, practice at a speed not too slow or fast, that is conducive to playing consistently with little or no mistakes. Once you get a better grasp of the exercise, slow down or speed up incrementally to challenge yourself. Once you strengthen your skills using metronome, drum machine, and jam tracks, record your own jam tracks to create your own arrangements of cover songs or write original material. youtu.be/FwjYf3DreSA
