TIMOTHY HAYWOOD SPENCE was born in South Carolina on March 3, 1839. He was a Civil War veteran and served das a member of the North Carolina Calvary. He moved his family to Arkansas sometime after the Civil War and remained there for a period of time before relocating in northeastern Dallas County, Texas (Cottonwood) in 1884. His daughter Ida Spence Wood, recalled that she was only nine years old when her family made the trip in a covered wagon. Timothy H. Spence was also a minister of the gospel. He died at Liberty Grove on Saturday, April 2, 1921 and is buried at Cottonwood Cemetery. Harold Spence is his Great-great grandson.
