TL;DR (too long, didnt read) Summer sucked a lot, excited for winter. Clipped the past few years but had no heated arenas or barns however had super heavy duty blankets. Was going to just put my 7 year old out to pasture for jut light trail riding so I got rid of heavy weight blankets, only have fly gear, rain sheet and a 150gram winter blanket + cooler. Would rather not buy more blankets, but Im in a fully heated arena and didnt buy a new show horse so I only have my OTTB mare to ride. What kind of clip would you recommend and would stall board be beneficial? *long version below* Winter is coming very soon and I couldnt be happier. This summer has been brutal for me and the horses. Everything has been sweaty and hot and just not as fun as summer should be. I chopped my hair off and clipped the mares manes to try and beat the heat but still no luck. Then there were the awful bugs, I cant wait for a good heavy frost to kill those buggers! Jesmond absolutely had to get a fly sheet for the first time ever, other times were to keep the bites minimal but this year both of us swelled up like balloons. All that aside though, with the imminent cold coming upon us, also comes the age old conversation of clipping. Same question every year... To clip or not to clip? This years circumstances have been more different than ever. We have clipped the past 2 years. Unheated barn, outdoor board, heavy training schedule (jump 2x a week, dressage schooling, lots of lunging), double heavy weight full coverage blankets. They still got sweaty but thats what you have sweat scrapers, coolers, towels and blow dryers for. However this year I got rid of my heavy weight blankets for my 7 year old OTTB mare. We planned to just use her lightly because I was going to be getting another show horse. Plans have changed (just my luck) and I dont have the array of blankets and liners and everything for this mare. I simply have fly gear, a full neck rain sheet, a high neck 150gram winter blanket and a cooler. At this moment I dont exactly have a massive budget to buy her really nice quality heavy blankets again, but we are at a heated facility now. Since I didnt end up getting the really awesome horse, I will be using Jesmond full time and I want to be jumping and doing dressage schooling to get ready to show early spring. What type of clip is the best for her? I know I have a stable blanket w/ full belly somewhere in her size but there are no d rings to attach a neck to this blanket. She doesnt usually sweat on her neck though. I can put her in a stall for winter if I have to as well. Thanks!~
