TNN Around the Town - 5th Street Park is Growing 12/15/2014 Todd D. Lederer - Editor City crews began work just a few minutes ago on the extension of the 5th Street Park. The newest section of the park will increase the grass area to run along side the Mercantile building. In addition to adding a couple more trees and benches, the new section will also feature an entertainment stage and seating area. To be used by the public and for events to be held at the Mercantile. The 5th Street park will now run from Center Street to Main St. Eventually, with the eventual goal to continue the park, connecting with the Rails to Trails Park. That section would cross privately owned property however, and has not been scheduled or budgeted for at this time. The newest section being worked on is a good example of Public/Private partnership projects. The owners of the Mercantile building, Joyce Properties, paid for the design and engineering of the project and submitted it to the city counsel, which approved construction in November. The total budget for this section is said to be approximately $20,000, according to the city staff we spoke with and competition is expected in February. This addition will be a benefit during the upcoming 2015 Oildorado celebration as well the possibility of bringing back the Farmers Market to Downton next year.
