TO ALL MY WAHROONGA FRIENDS YOU HAVE TO READ THIS - IT WILL AFFECT YOUR KIDS HEALTH Community Against Polluting Stacks (CAPS) In March 2014, the NSW State and Federal Governments announced the plan to build the NorthConnex tunnel to link the M1 and M2 motorways. Transurban was announced as the successful bidder to design and construct the tunnel. The tunnel will cost approx. $3 Billion of which $800M will be covered by state and federal governments. The current design has a ventilation stack at Wahroonga located in the middle of a built-up residential area with many schools. This stack will pump out huge amounts of unfiltered pollution from tens of thousand of cars and trucks in the 9KM tunnel, impacting the health of local residents and school children. Local state member Barry OFarrell and federal member Paul Fletcher have thrown their full support behind the current design in open disregard for the local residents in Wahroonga that they are paid to represent. If you attended the presentations from the project teams over the last week or so you would have seen how arrogant many of the presenters are and its very clear that they have all the support they need from government to push through with their design regardless of what the community thinks. Barry OFarrell wants to solve a traffic problem on Pennant Hills Road by creating an environmental problem in Wahroonga. This group is for local community members who oppose the current design for tunnel ventilation stacks. We will actively campaign to educate the community about the dangers of the project and ensure changes are made to the proposed design to ensure the safety and quality of life of those that live and work within the local area. WE SUPPORT THE TUNNEL - The traffic situation on Pennant Hills is shocking and we all agree on the benefits of building the tunnel. What we fiercely oppose is building the northern ventilation stack in its current location purely because its the easiest option. There are other options that will not impact the residents in Wahroonga. Everyone can benefit from this much needed tunnel project, this win/lose attitude from the NorthConnex team is nonsense and go against core values stated in Transurbans code-of-conduct, see below. We strive to live our values of HONESTY , INTEGRITY , HUMILITY , and ACCOUNTABILITY every day, in everything we do The pollution from the stack will spread many kilometres, just because you cannot see the stack doesnt mean you wont suffer the effects of the concentrated toxic fumes! How can you make a difference? Our State and Federal MPs have made a calculated decision that they can absorb the political fallout of the local residents impacted by the design to install a polluting stack in their electorates. You need to tell them otherwise! Your tax dollars are chipping in nearly one third of the cost of this project and you have every right to oppose this absolute betrayal of the local community. Attend the next project presentations at the following locations and dates. Ask some hard questions like how can all the fumes from a 9km tunnel be pumped out in one location and not harm the people living around it? How can they guarantee the prices of our properties will not drop like many property professionals are stating? Thursday 3rd April 2014, 7pm-9pm, Pennant Hills Golf Club, Corner Copeland Road and Burns South Road, Beecroft Saturday 5th April 2014, 2pm-4pm, Pennant Hills Community Centre, Corner Yararra Road and Ramsay Road, Pennant Hills Write to your local State and Federal members and let them know your thoughts! Reach out to your local schools P&C organisation and ask them to distribute information about the dangers of building a polluting stack so close to where children learn and play.
