* TO ALL OUR DEAR FELLOW INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS & ARTISTS: * NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR MUSIC IS, IT DOESNT SELL ITSELF OR AUTOMATICALLY GO VIRAL *BECAUSE* ITS AWESOME. [UNLESS ITS A GIMMICK, NOVELTY OR FUNNY.] WHOEVER started the rumor -- the common misnomer -- that good music sells itself needs a good spanking! Been studying the biz, producing records and interacting with colleagues at every level for a long time now. I dont need to be a total superstar (yet) to understand this reality and truth: Good music sells *WHEN* its produced meticulously, promoted HEAVILY and attached to a brand and image that is carefully crafted and consistently proliferated to a mass, well-targeted niche audience. Thats it. You may or may not have any clue how to meet all those conditions, which is why you align yourself with others who do (promoters, marketers, agents, managers, co-producers, collaborators, songwriters, engineers, publicists, etc.). Some of that may or may not (at first) include doing so with the help of an actual record label. Dont be dismayed by this truth: work around it and WITH it... Keep going IF you believe in what you do and have the energy, passion and drive. If you dont, God bless you -- tackle that plan B/safety/backup plan everyone shoves down our throats and make room for those of us who are passionate to never stop til we get there. Note: Its NOT going to be an easy ride. Its GOING to be a struggle. You WILL have make sacrifices. You WILL encounter pitfalls, conflicts, greed and otherwise. Dont let it get to you. Its a normal part of all this. I once lived in this, If I make great music, it will naturally find its audience fantasy land. I subscribed to that b.s. for a number of years, and my goal here is to stop other musicians from lying to themselves. I know too many musicians who are producing great records with catchy vocals and dont understand why they sometimes dont top the charts or get a lot of play. Its still a great record, most likely! It may need touch ups or maybe you need to collaborate, but thats not my point here. The MAIN point is: There is more to music success than the music itself! Soak that in. Dont just make great records, show it to a few friends and family members and hope it spreads across the globe like wildfire on its own. Not gonna happen. Make great records and THEN (if you want them to be famous) do your homework, build a brand and get it out there. ✯ JAKE NIEMI ✯ SINGER | PRODUCER | SONGWRITER
