TO ALL POTENTIAL LOANERS - PLEASE SHARE - if u are considering loaning a horse, especially an older one, think with your head and not your heart... Even though they are understandably never completely sound, if you are concerned about ANYTHING regarding the horses health, make sure u ask for it to be investigated BEFORE you agree to the loan. Ask to see proof that the horse is upto date on all its vaccs, dentistry and especially vetinary care. Speak to the horses vet if u can. Make sure the condition of rugs, saddles, etc etc. get noted down in detail at the time it gets handed over to u. Make sure u get down in writing about who pays for what because when one party lands up in the unfortunate circumstance of financial difficulty, it becomes very easy for parties to back out of verbal agreements, try get the other party to pay what is not rightly their responsibility, and when they refuse start insinuating poor care of the horse. Inevitably usually its the horse that suffers unnecessarily. It is far too easy these days for owners to blame loaners unfairly and make false accusations and people to throw phrases around like improper care There are some wonderful owners and some wonderful loaners in our horsie world - I have an amazing loaner of one of my horses at the moment - but there are also not-so-wonderful owners and loaners about... Always someone who will try and take advantage, hurt you and treat u unjustly. Always prepare and protect yourself for when things might turn sour.
