TO IMPROVE SUGARCANE FARMING. The M.S.C management has a serious challenge if it has to improve cane farming in this region. In my opinion, the following has to be prioritized: 1. ACIDIC SOIL: The company shall have to sample our soils, and supply farmers with organic fertilizers and other additives that lower the soil PH, (acidic content). 2. INSTANT CANE PROCEEDS PAYMENT: Every cane delivery at the mills should be weighed, and payment processed instantly to encourage farmers to plant cane and sell it to M.S.C. This will ensure the miller enjoys monopoly and beats other competitors for the same crop. 3. QUICK MATURING SEED VARIETY: Failure in this should be solely blamed on a less aggressive K.E.S.R.E.F (Kenya Sugar Research Foundation) which has totally failed to come up with a faster maturing cane variety with high yields. This body should be put in focus by all Sugar millers 4. AGGRESSIVE EXTENSION SERVICES: Field officers from this miller should pay frequent visits to farmers and provide the much needed advice and motivation on good cane husbandry that improves cane yields. 5. A VISIBLE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAM: I remember as a young lad when R.M.D Glassford was the GM at M.S.C, and mzee Oketch was his assistant, Schools in the cane growing region used to benefit a lot from the Miller. Whole classroom blocks were put up, books were donated...all these motivated the farming fraternity and made them identify with M.S.C. All in a nutshell, the farmer should be put on the priority list other than the shareholders for M.S.C to ride on unchallenged. Failure to do this will see other minor and lessor players raid this region for cane produce and give this miller a run for the farmers favor.
