For your information about this issue... MONUMENTAL ARCHES AND GATES The issue Monumental Arches and Gates comprises a booklet with eight self-adhesive class A stamps for sending standard letters in Spain. The Arco de la Malena in Tarancón, Cuenca, is the gateway to the old walled town. The round arch has an octagonal tower on either side. It was built using large ashlar stones for the keystones and corners and masonry for the remaining façades. The Puerta de la Finca Miralles gate in Barcelona was built in the modernist style by Gaudí between 1901 and 1902. The architect designed the enclosing wall and entrance gate to the estate, but not the house. The wall curves in waves and is made of ceramic brick. The gate is a large, petal arch crowned by a cast iron cross. It was declared a site of Cultural Interest in 1969. The Puerta de San Ginés in Miranda del Castañar, Salamanca, is Gothic in style. It is the most usual way of entering the walled part of the town, which retains its mediaeval layout and houses displaying coats of arms. The town stands in the Sierra de Francia mountains and was declared a site of Historical and Artistic Interest in 1973. The Arco de Villalar in Baéza, Jaén, is an arch built to commemorate the battle of Villalar in the province of Valladolid in 1521, when the royal army overcame the Comuneros (communities) of Castile. The Puerta de Jaén, rebuilt in 1526, stands next to it. The Arco de la Estrella in Cáceres dates from the 15th century and is the entrance to the old town from the Plaza Mayor main square. It was re-modelled by Manuel de Lara y Churriguera in 1726. The outer façade is topped by the coat of arms of Cáceres, and the inner by a statue of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella. The Arco de San Benito in Sahagún, León, was built in 1662 and is the towns most emblematic monument. The wealth of decoration in its heraldry, statues and inscriptions is outstanding. The civil engineer, Eduardo Saavedra, designed the layout of the main road under it as a triumphal arch. The Puerta del Puente in Córdoba was started in the mid-16th century to celebrate king Philip IIs visit to the city. It consists of three large bodies; the central one is topped by a circular pediment and the two side ones have Doric columns. The Puerta de San Lorenzo in Laredo, Cantabria, is part of the extension to the mediaeval wall. It consists of a large, low archway which was closed by a vertical gate. The upper part housed a permanent defence guard.
