TODAY - FREE FAMILY SHOWS AT THEARC THEATER! dcthriftymom/2014/06/29/dc-black-theatre-festival-free-shows-at-thearc-theater-june-2014/ DC Black Theatre Festival ∙ Broadway Comes to DC! ***Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters DC Black Theatre Festival Washington, DC Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale is a children’s stage play that teaches lessons about character, positive values and principles and compassion, based in the southeast African country of Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, and Mt. Nyangani are the backdrops for this tale of recognizing beauty on the inside as well as the outside. The production, described by many as an African Cinderella story, is brought to life by the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble and The Camden Camden Repertory Theater. Originally a book written by John Steptoe, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters tells the story of two sisters Manyara and Nyasha, both radiantly beautiful outwardly, although possessing almost opposite personalities. Manyara has a selfish and self-centered streak while Nyasha practices qualities more toward giving and helping people. Therefore when the two are summoned by the Great African King, who is looking for the “Most Worthy and Beautiful” girl to make as his queen, they set out on a journey to the King’s palace. Both are interrupted by a series of incidents and people with critical problems who seek their aid. How the two sisters handle these situations proves to be the testing ground for determining which one will be the new queen. Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale is adapted for the stage by Desi P. Shelton, with music & lyrics by Jamal Dickerson. Presented by Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble & The Camden Repertory Theater ***Seven Spools of Thread DC Black Theatre Festival Washington, DC THE UNIVERSAL AFRICAN DANCE AND DRUM ENSEMBLE AND CAMDEN REPERTORY THEATER WHO BROUGHT YOU MUFARO’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS AND AFRICAN CINDERELLA IN 2010 – 2011, CORDIALLY INVITE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO WITNESS OUR HOLIDAY THEATER SERIES, ORIGINAL MUSIC PRODUCTION, SEVEN SPOOLS OF THREAD A KWANZAA STORY THE “SEVEN SPOOLS OF THREAD” IS AN AFRICAN FOLKTALE ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE KENTE CLOTH WEAVES TOGETHER THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF KWANZAA USING THE FATE OF SEVEN BROTHERS’ AND THEIR LOOMING INHERITANCE.
