≡✪≡ TODAY IN SEA HISTORY - 21 October 1968: Scatback C-47B-45-DK Skytrain, C-47B USAAF/USAF s.n. 45-0934, manufactured in Douglas Aircraft Co., Long Beach plant. Originally allocated Donald Douglas serial ‘construction number’ C/N: 16,937. Reallocated Douglas C/N: 34,196. Class A Accident Location: 30 miles south of Ban Me Thuot in Darlac Province, Republic of Vietnam. The aircraft was assigned to Det. 1, 460th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (Scatback Flight Operations) at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. While enroute from TSN to Hong Kong, via Da Nang, carrying a load of personnel on R&R, when the pilot declared an emergency, stating that the port engine had failed, and that the propeller would not “feather”. He requested and received vectors for an emergency landing at Ban Me Thout airfield, but instead hit a mountainside at the 2,300 foot level. Number of people onboard: 23 -- 21 servicemen and 2 civilians (Seventeen men were assigned to Scatback, Det 1, 460th TRW.) ________________________________________ Maj Howard E.
