TODAY YEARS AGO....3 September 1966 - Jim Wynne won the seventh edition of the Cowes-Torquay, his seventh victory of the season and third of the nine total of his career, with the Ghost Rider, 28 Souter designed by the same Wynne and Walt Walters powered with a pair Daytona. After an initial phase in which Wynne is forced to chase due to engine problems, Wynne in Lyme Bay suddenly finds himself on command due to the retirement of the leaders of the race, the brothers Gardner, Shead and Merrik Lewis. But the sea was very rough causing problems to Wynne and his mechanic Bob Sherbert when their small boat was literally came in a wave causing injuries and fractures to the latter. Sherbert however shouted to Jim to continue(see the pic attached) and also allowing it to reach Torquay with an advantage of more than forty minutes on the second Macey. 1972 - Ken Cassir wins his sixth win of his career, the first three obtained in class III, and third of the season, the fourth edition of the Round the Island Race-Bollinger Globet aboard his yellow 33 Enfield powered MerCruiser Yellowdrama formerly Miss Enfield II Sopwith in 1970. Left the only OPI in the race after the withdrawal of the favorites De Angelis and Shead,Cassir prevailed on the OPII of Shand-Kidd and Lawson. 1983 - Tony Garcia won the first edition of Northport 200 his ninth victory of the season,third and the penultimate of his career aboard the wooden cat 38 Cougar powered by 8V Rahilly-Grady Arneson Special formerly Rampage of Eddie Trotta. Garcia with Keith Hazell as t-man has suffered from this race to the troubles of the engines that forced him to stop two times to repair but nevertheless in addition to overridehis rivals in OPI Jacoby and Morales, did so again on superboat Copeland, winning the overall standings. 1989 - Richard Lawson won the Gold Cup in Guernsey Guernsey, his fifth career victory and the season on the overall ten characterizing its presence in competitions in two winning years in OPI only in national waters. With on board John Walker and John Craxford, Lawson, an old acquaintance who already ran in the early seventies ,was on the 41 CUV powered Isotta Fraschini turbo diesel Follett Car Group which kept the original livery of Annabella with whom they had ongoing brothers Ravizza the year before. The victory had a special flavor because it took place by beating two rivals with fellow fast cats 38 Cougar as those of Cook and Clarke forced to succumb because the sea conditions were not optimal for that type of hull.
